In 1851–52 Ayer Coalfield opened up in central Kern County producing coal that led to increased development around this area including new towns such as Joshua Tree and Madera along with many farms that became stockyards or dry goods stores (today’s Goodyear tire plant). This increase in development caused traffic congestion on major streets which led to the establishment of several schools including one for girls which became Mercy Academy; also a post office was established here in 1852 by Jepson Noyes - later renamed Pico Union Station - serving both communities before being moved to Madera five years later during construction work associated with Butterfield Overland Mail Railway project connecting Los Angeles and Reno Nevada via Stockton California .
