The economy of Tulare is based on agriculture, with a significant contribution from manufacturing and services. The name "Tulare" comes from Spanish words meaning "place where beans grow." The town was founded in 1887 by George Armstrong Culp and named for him because he bought most of the land which makes up present-day Tulare. In 1903, John Prentice Morton purchased land adjacent to what is now downtown Tulare and built a military post there to serve as a warning against Apache raids into southern Kern County. In 1957, when Gold Rush fever began sweeping through Southern California, President Dwight D. Eisenhower designated Tulare as the site of an ammunition production plant to help control the uncontrollable demand for gunpowder during that period of dramatic economic growth in America. In 1968, when Californication became reality with passage of Proposition 8 (the ban on same-sex marriage), City Council member John Burton moved his family from their home in nearby Livermore to purchase property east of downtown Tularre so they could be closer to political decisions made about how best to deal with gay people living within reach while they awaited official marriage licenses from state officials. They continue to live here today as part of an unofficial but deeply embedded community that supports queer rights throughout Kern County and beyond. By 1906, when statehood was granted to California, tulareite production had ceased but brickmaking continued until World War II When hostilities ended local brickyards switched their focus to war materials such as ammunition and planes for American military camps all over Northern California In 1945 construction began on what would become Tulare State University which opened its doors in 1951
