The town was originally called Bear River but when it became known as Truckee it stuck because there were already two other settlements called Bear River – one near Sacramento and another just north of Reno at what is now Bishop (now part of Carson City). In 1855, captain Truckee discovered an important water source that would become central to both the growth and development of Truckee. He named this discovery Mill Creek which led to the nickname “Creek Town” due to its importance in early local commerce. In 1863, captain Truckee bought about 2,500 acres from Joaquin Miller for $2 million dollars ($40 million today) making him one of the richest men in America at that time. This land later became known as John Folsom Park which contains many famous landmarks such as Folsom Prison and Valley View Casino Resort which are all located within driving distance of downtown Truckee today! After purchasing much land within present-day Reno and Sparks he built more than 20 homes on his large acreage including several elegant stone houses still standing today! One such house was built by Jens Jensen whoironized Streetscape Enterprises Incorporated opposite University Avenue & Sutter Street between 1951-1957 using stoneware bipacks imported from China! It should be noted that until 1861 Captains George A., Doniphan, Kearny and Crocker had been operating their ranches from Bearsville Rancho El Morroco about 10 miles northeast of present day Reno on Indian Reservations under military orders from President Abraham Lincoln! After coming into possession of large tracts east side Johnson Valley where he had long desired settlement Captains George A., Doniphan and Kearny directed their household goods & equipment wagons loaded wagons full o silverware & china etc., 13 miles northeast via Stockton Pass across Anaconda Mountain near modern day White Sands National Monument thence up past Crane Flat onto Government Road leading northwest 7 miles along CR 160A to finally reaching Bear River Landing @ Red Rock Creek Crossing where they planted winter crops before returning next spring aboard ships anchored offshore until May 1863 when US Navy blockaded Spanish Fleet off coast preventing them from arriving home

In 1951, a fire destroyed most of what remained of downtown Truckee; however, due to donations from local residents and support from national organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, reconstruction began almost immediately and has continued ever since. Today's downtown is one of many examples of how community involvement can lead to lasting change – both physical and social – when undertaken through civic engagement.
