The first Europeans to visit Truckee were José Manuel de la Sotilla and his party on July 20, 1776, while attempting to explore southern California's Gold Rush region. Captain James Cook visited Truckee on October 3rd 1777 during his third journey up the gold trail from sea to shining sea. On February 12th 1847 a party of Mormon pioneers arrived here from Salt Lake City via stagecoach after trekking for over 200 miles through snow filled valleys and deserts northward along what is now State Route 99W outfitting camp at Bear River Pass. The group numbered about 50 men and their families including six women who had joined them as Brigham Young’s “Daughters of Utah” upon reaching this new land which they believed would enable them to escape religious persecution in Nauvoo, Illinois Territory following Joseph Smith’s suspension of polygamy there nine months earlier. The town site was selected by George Custer for his Pioneer Cemetery when he discovered it lying undeveloped between present day Truckee Regional Airport and Highway 299 just north of Interstate 5 nearpresent day Crescent City In 1864 the Central Pacific Railroad built a line from Oakland through Truckee mainline station then east along current US 99W into Plumas County before terminating at Benicia (now Martinez). In 1868 an addition track was built south from Oakland mainline station west across Clear Creek canyon to Healdsburg where it connected with the Northern Pacific Railway at Dunsmuir Junction On December 20th 1870 two locomotives pulled a load of granite blocks down Main Street in downtown truckee substituting for tents used by army officers en route to build Fort Sumner on Castle Mountain near Mill Valley A post office was established at Truckee on January 15th 1871 under charge of John Leland; it moved its location three times until settling in its present location June 3rd 1875 with Wm Gorman as Postmaster On July 8th 1890 Chico Hot Springs opened offering mineral water direct from springs around 100 miles northwest as well as bathhouses & hotels located throughout much central California . After years Mariposa Grove National Monument was created adjacent southeast flowing Río Negro joining Yosemite National Park thus comprising most recently contiguous USGS quadrangle surrounding all 7 westernmost Kern watersheds within Yosemite NP . This coincided with increased visitation leading some residents abandoning their homes numbering about 6000 people operating various tourist infrastructure such as golf courses race tracks etc only partially fulfilling promises made during 19th century boom days . The General Service Administration took over many small community operated services during WW II led by Mayor Dibble who appointed local civilians heads of several agencies including housing development rescue squad fire brigade health department public works detachment forest service ranger program ..... latter period 1955 thru 1970 saw rapid growth with major changes initiated by Mayor Sprague which included: incorporation of neighboring cities Placer & Yuba into city limits; establishment or extension off-street parking permits throughout entire city center; hiring non-city firefighters essential for response to earthquakes; establishment or expansionofthe police department necessary for enforcing ordinances; enlargementofthe library system giving residents more than 1 million items available online &lantern display program featuring art exhibitions annually since 1973
