Truckee is located about twenty miles east of Reno and ninety-six miles north of Las Vegas on Interstate 80. The Truckee River flows through the town. The name "Truckee" comes from the Spanish word "traqueros," meaning "to track." In 1849, General John Custer's army passed through Truckee on their way to fight the Sioux and were met by a group of citizens who offered to provide them with food and lodging while they were passing through. The name stuck and since then it has been used as a place for people to stay when traveling in or out of Nevada County. The first post office was established in 1851. It was called North Truckee because it was south of present day Carson City on State Route 506A. The first store in Truckee opened in 1852 and became known as the North Mines Store due to its location at North Pole Hill Road (now CR 805). In 1865, another store named South Mines opened along what is now Yosemite Avenue (SR 727). This store continued operations until 1888 when it closed down due to financial difficulties caused by Thoroughbred racing competition which had become popular at that time across California. In 1902, an electric railway line ran through Truckee making it possible for people to travel between Reno and Lake Tahoe without having to leave their cars overnight or take other routes around Nevada County. This enabled businesses such as hotels and restaurants near both towns to start operating early morning hours without having customers wait in long lines during evening rush hour traffic congestion on Interstate 80 outside of Reno! recalled his experiences living there years later when he served as Mayor pro tempore of Los Angeles from 1949-1953

The first Europeans to visit Truckee were the Spanish in 1769, who made a landing on May 1. The Spanish mission was abandoned in 1814 and the land became part of California. A fort was built here in 1846 by United States Army Lieutenant Colonel John C. Fremont, which served as a Feather River outpost until 1851 when it was moved to Sacramento. In 1861, Truckee became part of Nevada Territory and in 1912 it became part of State of California.
