Truckee is a small town in the foothills of California. It is located about an hour's drive north of Sacramento, on a bend in the Sacramento River. Truckee was founded in 1864 by Isaac Morse and his wife Hannah. The town was named for John Truckee, an American Civil War veteran and judge who served as the first postmaster of Truckee. In 1870, Truckee became part of Nevada Territory and was incorporated as a city in 1903. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II with the influx of troops and civilians from Northern California to fight in the war. After the war, Truckee experienced a period of decline which began to reversed after voters approved Measure S-10 in 1946 to annex adjacent rural communities into the city limits. The annexation process led to increased traffic and pollution that caused significant damage to local forests and parks. In 1966, Mayor Harvey Milk ran for office on a platform opposing annexation into the city limits and lost handily. Since then, efforts have been made by residents to establish independent municipalities within downtown Truckee limit while preserving many of its features such as wide open spaces and close-to-the-city living style
When the first volley of gunshots rang out in America on April 14, 1775, the participants were not sure what was happening. They thought perhaps a hunting party had run into trouble and needed help getting back home. But when they saw the large number of muzzle flashes coming from nearby Fort Duquesne, they knew something more than just a hunting party was going on. It was Revolutionary War gunfire! The cannons at Fort Duquesne would fire sporadically for the next few months to keep the British from knowing where we were firing our shots. But eventually they learned and began shelling us with their long guns. Eventually, after many skirmishes and bombardments by both sides, the British decided to surrender on October 17, 1776. This gave American independence!

The peak of Truckee's development came during World War II when the city hosted an estimated 50 percent of all the United States Army's military training camps between 1942 and 1945. In addition to providing temporary housing for troops while they underwent Camp Niteroi training camp south of Reno, Truckee also became home to 1st Battalion (19th Infantry) Nevada Volunteer Infantry Regiment (now part of 8th Infantry Division) prior to its relocation to Fort Carson in Colorado later that year. During the war period, Truckee experienced large-scale growth as both men and women turned their energies towards making munitions and other wartime goods available to Allied Forces stationed throughout California. After hostilities ceased in 1945, many businesses closures followed as Main Street filled with military hardware dealers and retailers catering exclusively to servicemen/women seeking items related to their service or patriotism Although economic decline has been common throughout most American towns during this time period - caused by various factors such as technological advance or increased competition from imports - Truckee nonetheless managed to maintain some semblance of vitality until recent years due largely to its historical significance as a center for munitions manufacturing."
Truckee was founded in 1853 by George A. Smith and named for the nearby Lake Truckee. It became a town in 1856 and a city in 1911. The city is located on the east bank of the Truckee River, about 20 miles southeast of Sacramento.
