In 1951, Mayor John Ahern ordered all businesses within city limits closed because of concerns about air quality; however, this decision was overturned on appeal and business reopened two days later. In 1978, Mayor John Duhigg declared that "Truckee is not going away" and announced plans for new development around the downtown core including an arena and shopping mall. The success of thesedevelopment efforts led to increased tourism throughout the 1980s and 1990s; today Truckee remains one of Northern California's most popular tourist destinations.
