Tracy is a small town in the state of California, located about an hour and a half north of San Francisco. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census and 7,316 at the 2015 census. Tracy is part of the Kern County region. The name "Tracy" originally came from two Native American words: "kot-tanka" meaning "place where people gather," and "ria" meaning "point." In 1853, James Tracy built a wagon road through this area from Bakersfield to Stockton. He named his new town after his birthplace in Ireland. In 1876, General James Hays appointed J.B. Tracy as one of three commissioners to study irrigation systems in Kern County. A year later, he founded the first water company in Kern County with eight shares of stock Mercantile National Bank stock worth $500 each. This was also when Tracy started building his rancho which still stands today on what is now Union Street in Tracytown adjacent to North High School (now known as Katella Middle School). The first home built there was called 'Haley's Cabin.' It burned down within six months but was replaced by what is now known as 'Tracy's Rancho' which still stands today on that same site.
