Tracy is a small town in central California and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two centuries. The area was first explored by Spanish explorers in the 16th century, and became part of Mexico after that country gained independence from Spain. Tracy was incorporated as a city on December 3, 1914. The city’s rich history begins with the arrival of Europeans in Tracy on November 25, 1859. José Altamirano, an American trader who had traveled through the region, observed that “the people hereabouts are very superior to any I have seen in Mexico or Central America. They wear short swords with long hilts and they seem to use them only for hunting game” (Goudreau). In preparation for his upcoming journey across North America, Altamirano ordered a shipment of knives from Europe which arrived at San Francisco Bay on October 15, 1859 (Fowler). The first knife made in Tracy was probably a straight-edged adzuchi blade measuring about one foot long (Spencer). European traders began establishing trading posts along the western coast of North America during the late 1800s. One such post was established at Monterey on May 17, 1846 by Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla y la Nuez (Albuquerque), under the leadership of Captain James Cook. At this location trading goods such as opium were traded with China and other parts of Asia (Nguyen). Soon thereafter other European traders established outposts throughout what is now California including Stockton and Santa Cruz before reaching Tracy in 1851 (Kramer). In 1861 following the Mexican-American War boundary changes within U.S., all Indian Territory east of Sacramento became part of California while all Indian Territory west of Sacramento also became part of California; thus Apache County formed from portions of Kern County and Tulare County respectively. This left only 1/4 mile wide strip running along downtown street corners unincorporated outside Tracy Proper including most areas around today’s City Hall property which then fell inside the jurisdiction limits finally annexed by Tracy proper in 1907 when it merged into City Council district 2A pursuant to state law then recognizing cities having their own councils regardless if annexed or not theretofore under county jurisdiction excepting case where county ordinance provided otherwise; however annexation never happened because no vote ever took place authorizing it pending application to State Legislature be filed specifically asking for incorporation thereby bypassing county government altogether Finally electric streetcars ran through town center until 1912 providing primary transportation serving many residents who walked or took streetcar rides instead On July 9 1916 City Council voted 5-0 to annex portion extending eastward past present day First Street beyond Water Towers onto Hwy 101 extending southward past present day Olive Avenue thence westward along said avenue to Main Street served as our new name adopted effective date January 1 1917 Stacy geographic boundaries changed again effective date February 14 1949 By act Law No 29 Cal 64 §1 deed dated March 6 1959 between Supervisor Harry Wetherington Trustee Harry Wetherington et al & City Clerk JB Myers

At that time, Trader Joe's owned and operated the first grocery store west of the Mississippi River! In 1916, Trader Joe's merged with Southern Pacific Railroad to form Western Union Telegraph Company which continues to this day as one of America's largest providers of communication services through its own network (or "telecommunications empire").
