Tracy was founded by Anglo-Saxon farmers in 1848 and named for Captain James Tracy who had explored this area in 1825. The first post office was established here on February 12th, 1850. The town grew rapidly due to its location and resources; it had a population of 3,000 by 1860. In 1886, Tracy became an incorporated city with a population of 10,000 people. By 1930, however, Tracy's growth had slowed and it had a population of 7500 people when it lost its city status. The decline of Tracy began during World War II when many jobs were lost due to the war effort and increased competition from other towns in the region. However, since then there has been significant redevelopment within the town center which has helped to resurgence its economy and boost its profile as a tourism destination for both individuals and businesses alike In recent years there have been efforts made to increase cultural awareness around Tracy's history through various events such as heritage walks (e.g., Pioneer Days) and historical reenactments One such project is called "Tracy: A History from BeginningToEnd" which will be held in October 2015 in commemoration of the centennial anniversary of incorporation into the City of Tracy
