The Tracy area has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two thousand years. In 1847, the Mexican government granted Rancho San Miguel to George Copley and his brother-in-law, James Irvine. The ranch passed through various hands before it was sold to Humboldt County in 1896. One of the first people to live in Tracy was W.H. Overstreet, who came to the area in 1893 as part of a group that explored western California. In 1905, US Route 101 was built through the area and made Tracy one of the most important towns along that route. The following year saw the opening of Tracy High School which became one of the largest high schools in California. In 1926, Area code 209 was assigned to Tracy and remains its current number today. One of the earliest businesses in Tracy was an ice cream parlor called "The Creamery." That business closed down in 1966 after multiple failures within a few years; however, their memory still lives on thanks to a store named Aftershock Hobby Lobby which opened up near Highway 99 & I-5 interchange near Rolling Hills Lake just outside Of Tracy on Feb 6th 2016

Tracy, California is an incorporated city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 7,854 at the 2010 census. Tracy was formed on February 17, 1851 from part of the former Rancho El Dorado Mexican land grant to the east of San Francisco. It named after Captain John Tracy who died in 1847 while exploring San Francisco Bay. On July 15, 1850, Tracy received a charter from the State of California for a town to be established thereon within six months. The town plat was filed on October 10 and Tracy's first post office opened on November 5th. The first store built in Tracy was the Storey Tucker store which served as a commissary for goods bought by settlers moving into what is now north central San Francisco. The townsfolk soon realized that they needed more than just a post office and grocery store when they discovered that they had plenty of natural resources such as water and fertile soil. They soon started building roads and bridges to get their goods to market and also started developing other businesses such as manufacturing Tin Can Ladders and Printing Presses with local newspapers being their initial product line In 1879 two brothers by the name of Pemberton purchased some additional Rancho El Dorado land adjacent to present day Tracy which led to much development along what is now Highway 680 East including some large homes built by Pemberton himself The largest single project undertaken during these early years however were the construction of numerous school buildings including one still standing today called Valley View Elementary School Municipal services were gradually added until 1968 when fire destroyed most of downtown Tracy leaving only rubble remaining today
