When annexation occurred by Siskiyou County in 1871 it was given its current name of Tracy because all citizens were white male farmers or their families living within five miles of each other then. The city has a population of over 165,000 people and is the largest city in the San Joaquin Valley. Tracy was named after General Tracy who fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1879, General Tracy's rancho de la Purísima Concepción was purchased by José Báez who renamed it Rancho Tecoma after his father-in-law. After José Báez died in 1924, his son Francisco Noriega took over management of the rancho Tecoma until he sold it to James Wickersham in 1934. Wickersham renamed it Tracy Ranch and later developed it into an agricultural center with citrus fruit production and other farming activities. In 1966, Mayor Irwin Krasner established the City Council Chambers at City Hall to house municipal government operations which were moved out of City Hall after that year's firestorm caused by a protest against plans to build a shopping mall adjacent to City Hall.
