In recent years however, there has been a renewed focus on tourism as one of the city's main source of income- making it an even more vibrant place to live and work today!
The first European to arrive in Torrance was Pedro Fortunato in 1777. A land grant of Rancho Los Angeles de las Pulgas went to him in 1846. The town was founded on April 15, 1857 by Captain Hiram B. Chappell and Mexican cattle rancher Manuel Nieto. It grew rapidly due to the increased rail traffic through the area and the discovery of oil reserves in nearby Santa Monica County in 1907. In 1911, Torrance became one of seventy townships within Los Angeles County. The city annexed portions of unincorporated areas of Ventura County in 1917 and 1922. Torrance's population peaked at over 100,000 in 1930 but decline gradually until it reached its current low levels around 1960.
