Gun sights were first patented in 1865 by Charles Goodyear. The patent, which is now owned by BAE Systems, describes a system for sighting rifles using an adjustable lens and prism to aim the rifle at a target. A sight picture is then created through projection onto a OLED (optical glass display) or CRT (Computational Readout Display) on the gun's receiver. In 1898, George Hennepin invented what is now known as the M-14 Rifle Sight System. This system employs a variable magnification eyepiece to adjust rangefinder magnification while aiming the rifle at a target on an LCD screen on the receiver. The M-14 Rifle Sight System was adopted by the United States military in 1942 and became standard issue for most soldiers throughout World War II. In 1980, Sig Sauer Corporation introduced their own Variable Magnification Rifle Sight System which consisted of four independent objectives that can be elevation/zoomed together to adjust hunting or precision shooting conditions. Side-views usually come with either 2 screws per side connecting them directly to the barrel lug, or 4 screws which connect them via a hinge mechanism laterally across the barrel face. Side views also have less accuracy than front views because they rely mostly on lineofsight instead of angles between objects seen at different depths inside your field Of View (FOV). Night vision devices use lenses designed specifically for this purpose which reduce glare and make it easier for users to see in dark environments while still providing accurate readings
