In 1911, they started making machineguns and began selling them to the military. The company grew so big that it decided to sell its firearms through stores rather than just produce them itself. In 1918, they produced their first automatic rifle and became one of the leading manufacturers of such weapons in the world. The company continued making firearms until 1959 when it was bought by Remington Arms Company.Since then, Torrance Firearms has been part of Remington Arms Company’s core product line and continue manufacturing handguns as well as other firearms products such as shotguns and rifles. The city of Torrance, California is located in Los Angeles County and was originally founded in 1909. The city's name comes from the Spanish word torre, meaning tower. In 1923, the city passed a resolution recognizing May Day as an international day of commemoration for worker's rights. The city has since grown to become one of Southern California's most vibrant cities with a rich history. The first European settlers in Torrance were Spanish soldiers who arrived in 1781. They built a small rancho on the east side of town and named it Rancho La Brea after their patron saint, La Brea Avenue ran through the town. By 1849, Torrance had a population of 100 people and was part of Mexican County. When California gained statehood in 1850, Torrance became part of San Bernardino County and remained that way until 1903 when it merged with Ventura County to form Los Angeles County. In 1906, Mayor Ayer approved the construction of what is now City Hall on Main Street by then-City Manager Jens Svanstrom. The building served as both a municipal courthouse and library until 1951 when it was replaced by City Hall Annex which still stands today. In 1907, residents voted to name their street after former Mayor John Wachs (1863-1927). Wachs was born in Germany but immigrated to America at age 12 following his family's move from Europe onto Ellis Island where he worked as an engineer before becoming mayoralty material for candidates running for office in Orange county during the Populist movement of 1901-1902 (the precursor to Modern Republicanism). After serving two terms as mayor (1907-10), Wachs returned home to Austria where he died years later at age 97 without ever having taken office due to term limits set by then-Governor Hiram Johnson (1856-1929). Torrance also saw some heavy military action during World War II; on December 6th 1944 local resident Carlos Gutierrez led volunteer forces against Ulysses S Grant’s XV Corps units besieging Lompoc Naval Air Station near Santa Monica while other civilians took up arms against American forces under General William “Wild Bill” Donovan’s command attempting Operation Neptune’s Spear–the largest amphibious landing operation undertaken during World War II. With over 1,500 Marines—including 350 US Navy Seamen–commanding more than 3200 sailors/soldiers from 33 countries participate[5], this event is considered one of Californias early WWII successes[6]. Although many civilian casualties resulted from artillery barrages directed at Japanese positions near Point Mugu rather than enemy troops,[7] Gutierrez remains recognized locally as one of Americas leading commanders in Occupation Japan.[8]
