Torrance, California is a city located in the southern part of Los Angeles County, California. It is adjacent to the city of LA and has a population of over 197,000 people as of 2019. Thecity was founded on May 14, 1899 by American entrepreneur George Hearst. In 1923, Torrance became one of the original cities in the Greater Los Angeles Area when it amalgamated with nearby Hawthorne and West Hollywood. The city's name comes from twoadjacent hills called Torrance Hills and Torrance Point. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Torrance were Justus Wofford and his family who arrived on horseback from San Francisco on July 29, 1871. Wofford named his settlement after himself and his brother-in-law Samuel Morse who had built the first transcontinental Telegraph Line between San Francisco and Sacramento that year. By 1875, most of what is now Torrance had been developed as a rancho including Presentoria Road which ran east–west through the center of town. A post office was established at presentoria road on November 15th, 1876 under the name "Bolsa de Oro" (Gold Spot). The name changed to "Torrance" on February 8th 1900 due to objections from other towns inLos Angeles County that had already received their own namesakes - Riverside (1905), Westwood (1907), El Monte (1908), Gardena (1910) - all becauseof landowner George Hearst's ownership of newspapers such as New York Call & Times (1890)and Southern California Herald Tribune(1892). On February 1st 1901 City Council voted 6-2 to change its name to "Torrance" after hearing complaints from other localities about being given names that already referred to them informally or without proper recognition. The new name was approved by voters on April 10th 1901 with an 86% majority vote followed by a public dedication ceremony at Canoga Park Race Course where Mayor John Sutter delivered the keynote speech proclaiming "the new town of Torrance will rise above all others." The landmark Old Town Hall which stood near present day 101 E Pasadena Ave still remains standing today as one of only two buildings remaining unchanged in downtownTorrance since its incorporation over 100 years ago! In 1909 Enrico Fermi developed Tesla’s Rancho Santa Anita while living there during World War I; he donated land for municipal development including a park which became known as Fermi Park . After World War II many workers moved into town seeking cheaper housing than found elsewhere in Los Angeles County so much so that developers began calling Torrence “theSiliconValley” although it never really achieved this moniker until recently when more manufacturing activity shifted away from Southern California altogether
Torrance was founded in 1907 by Japanese immigrants and is the oldest city in Los Angeles County. The population of Torrance grew rapidly after World War II, reaching over 100,000 by 1950. The city experienced a rapid growth spurt during the 1960s and 1970s, with the population growing to more than 200,000 by 1980. However, Torrance's recent population growth has been paltry compared to other nearby cities.
