A year later, Joseph Hurd bought Rancho La Brea from Captain José Nieto and built a small cabin thereon in April of 1849 which served as the beginning point for settlement by Anglo-Americans throughout southernmost Los Angeles County (what is now Orange County). On May 25th 1850 US military troops burned down Hurd's cabin to prevent him from continuing settlers into what would become Torrance. In 1853 Isaac Asimov moved to Pasadena from Russia with his family and started selling newspapers out of his home on Main Street across from MAPFRE Stadium (later known as UCLA Stadium). His business soon relocated to 4151 W Olympic Blvd where it remains today - one of Southern California's most well-known commercial corridors.. The company rapidly grew into oneof LA’s largest employers with over 20,000 employees by 1980 Asportation saw continued growth until 1990 when then Mayor Art Agnos ordered all departments within city limits closed due To budgetary concerns following World War IIAn order that still stands Today's city government services are primarily provided through its three Unified School Districts: Eastside Elementary School District; Northridge High School District; and Willowbrook Elementary School District

The city of Torrance, California was founded in 1905 by brothers Edwin and Roy Torrance. The town quickly became a major center for the agricultural industry, as well as a popular tourist destination. In 1966, Torrance joined the City of Los Angeles. Today, the city is home to more than 60,000 residents and has become one of the most vibrant and economically prosperous cities in Southern California. Torrance’s history begins with its founding as a small farming community on the outskirts of Los Angeles. The Torrances were born into a family of agriculturists who had been living in southern California for over twenty years. Edwin’s father, Isaac Torres, had arrived from Spain in 1875 and started an olive oil business in Pasadena. Isaac’s sons also played an important role in early Torrance development: Roy first purchased land near present-day Academy Road and College Boulevard in 1903; then he built a house there that still stands today (now known as the Edwin & Roy House). In 1905, when brother Edwin organized what would later become Santa Monica County to service his farming area around Malibu Creek,[1] he decided to move his operations into what is now downtown Torrance[2]. Though it began modestly enough with just a couple of storefronts,[3] by 1910 TORRANCE had developed into one of Santa Monica County’s leading commercial centers.[4] By 1915 TORRANCE was home to over 100 businesses including clothing stores and hardware stores;[5] movie theaters such as The Regal;[6] restaurants such as Mrs. Pritchett’s Luncheonette;[7] dance halls such as King Kong Clubhouse;[8][9] schools such as Burnett School District No. 1 (now part of Arcadia Unified School District);[10][11][12][13][14][/15][/16][/17]: health clubs including Hollywood Health Clubs; and libraries including the nearby Hastings Public Library (now Downtown LA Library).
The first Europeans to set foot in Torrance were the Spanish in 1821, who founded a mission station on the site of present-day Torrance. The original rancho was part of Rancho San Felipe grants given to Juan Bautista de Anza by King Carlos III of Spain. The grant included land for horses, cattle, and Missions Santa Clara and Nuestra Señora de la Penitencia. In 1847, Alvarado married Maria Teresa Fremont, daughter of Hernando Fremont, founder of Los Angeles County. They had two children: Alvarado and Mercedes. In 1849 Antonio Pacheco built a Rancho Pacheco east of Torrance on what is now Flower Street near Pasadena Boulevard. It was here that California State Normal School (later Southern California College) was established in 1863 as one of the few institutions in Orange County free from tuition fees imposed by Mexico during the Mexican–American War. After annexation by the United States in 1912, USC became University City when it merged with other campuses from Los Angeles County including Pomona College and UCLA. In 1901 an express train arrived at Angels Landing Railway Station from Lompoc which linked with local trains going to points north and west across LAX Airport
