During World War II, Torrance played an important role as one of three Military Airfields located within Los Angeles County and Orange County boundaries which supported Navy Fighter Squadron 9 (VF-9) at North Hollywood Airport from 1942-1945; these airfields were part of Operation Neptune’s Spear which targeted Japanese forces throughout Southern California coastal areas including Anaheim Hills, Carson Valley, Lancaster Heights/Mount Wilson Village/USAF Station El Toro and Yorba Linda AFB Torrance also saw significant activity during Prohibition with several bars being open 24/7 serving alcohol until 1933 when state law changed allowing only water sales . After prohibition ended torrance experienced rapid growth with many businesses opening up such as grocers stores meat packing companies bakeries candy stores hotels restaurants bars nightclubs etc During this time there were several large events held here such as The Gold Rush which took place between 1849-1852 when gold seekers arrived seeking fortune in this region later on other events such as Copa America football matches are remembered here including both 1906 US Open Tennis Championships hosted by then Armistice Hotel while also 1938 Mexican Grand Prix hosted at Willowbrook Race Track

In 1992, Mayor Jerry Sanders decided that Torrance needed a new library so he approved the construction of One California Plaza which became one of America's most expensive libraries ever built at $225 million dollars. Since its completion,Torrance has seen steady growth with an estimated population of 24,000 residents in 2016.
The first Europeans to visit Torrance were the Spanish in 1769, who built a mission on the site of present-day Torrance. The Mission was abandoned in 1821 and then used as a military base during the Mexican–American War. In 1886, California became a US state, and Torrance became an incorporated city. The city's primary industry until the late 20th century was agriculture, but now it is home to numerous businesses and organizations including Pixar Animation Studios and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Co., Inc.
