It is the second most populous city in Ventura County after Santa Paula. Thousand Oaks has been called "the first Progress City" because it was once a rural agricultural town that became an industrial center during the 20th century. The name Thousand Oaks comes from Rancho Cucamonga which was given to Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo by Spanish explorer missions president Manuel Nieto on November 3, 1769 as part of Rancho San Vicente de las Casas grant. In 1881, John D'Angell purchased title to Rancho Cucamonga from Mexican Governor Alvarado Castro for $1 million dollars plus interest. D'Angell named his new land Thousand Oaks after his wife's family name—Thousand Horseshoes—because he believed that if they could find a place with this name where they could live happily ever after, they would be successful developers. D'Angell did not actually purchase any land in Thousand Oaks until 1893 when he bought 10 acres at 7014 Simi Valley Road from ranch owner Hiram Smeaton Jr.. He soon began construction on what would become known as "The Paramount," one of the largest movie studios in Hollywood and one of the most influential businesses in Southern California during its time (it still occupies that location). The Paramount Movie studio building still stands today and can be seen from Interstate 5 southbound near El Camino Real/PCH interchange. D'Angelo built another large studio at 9000 Vineland Ave., also now removed but visible from I-5 east bound just past I-805 interchange; this structure remains Ancoats Building #2 on USC campus today. In 1954, homebuilder Richard Nixon donated his assets to create Occidental College Foundation which purchased 130 acres adjacent to Yorba Linda Road (now Oxnard Boulevard) for use as college farmland; however, Occidental never moved into their new farmhouse until 1978 when it reopened as Westridge Park Village and continued to operate as such until 2000 when OccidentalCollege closed its doors due to financial troubles A group led by then Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa reactivated Occidental College Foundation which purchased 133 acres adjacent to Antelope Rd., between Calabasas Creek & Vail Lake for use as college farmland starting in 2006; however again no move onto campus took place until 2016 when OccidentalCollege reopens their doors under new ownership under the name Lone Peak College HS Campus Incorporating many old buildings including President Nixon's childhood home(s) situated on former Occidental College property located across Route 101 WEST OF LONE Peak COLLEGE HS Campus From mile marker 46
