The Thousand Oaks Shooting Club was organized in 1913. The club is a member of the California Rifle and Pistol Association, which has chapters throughout the state. MacArthur who had been appointed governor of California during World War I. On November 16th of that year General MacArthur donated land for what would become MacArthur Park which is now one of the largest public parks in Southern California. The total cost of building and maintaining MacArthur Park was $2 million dollars which was funded by contributions from people all over Southern California including citizens from Thousand Oaks as well as other cities such as Riverside and Fullerton. In 1923 there were only 350 residents living in Thousand Oaks when Mayor Haggerty assigned his assistant commissioner to attract development around Memorial Drive near CampusMartius High School which would eventually lead to the current shopping center called First Avenue Shopping Center being built there in 1957 by Atherton Development Company Incorporated (ADI). ADI also developed many other retail buildings throughout downtown Los Angeles including Cloverdale Plaza (later known as Regency complex), Third Street Plaza (later known as Westwood Village), Imperial Street Plaza (later known as North Hollywood Village), Westchester Square (later known as Century City) and numerous others before they were purchased by Jussie Smollett's Parents' Group Properties LLC for $500 million on December 6th, 2007.
