The idea behind this merger was twofold: to keep Thousand Oaks separate from downtown L.A., which was rapidly becoming overcrowded; and also because downtown LA was becoming increasingly expensive and out of reach for many small businesses and residents. But while Century City grew rapidly outside of downtown L.A., Thousand Oaks stagnated economically until the late 1960s when it experienced rapid growth due to annexations by nearby Lynwood (now Vernon) intoLos Angeles County as well as new development around Lakewood Ranch (now Northridge). With current boundaries set at 6th Street south of Arroyo Seco Boulevard eastward along Riverside Drive (formerly 5th Street), it has since become one of Greater Los Angeles' most diverse cities with over 170 languages spoken within its borders alone!
