"Commercial property zoned for industrial use gradually developed into residential areas lined with bars and restaurants near Interstate 10 while large office buildings westgate mall replaced smaller stores eastgate mall closed."

By 1920, Temple City had reached its current size with over 30 businesses and 1,000 residents. During World War II, much of what is now downtown were built up as housing for soldiers stationed within easy reach of Riverside Army Base or local airfields like Ontario Field (later Corona Airport). After the war ended, most buildings were torn down or converted into civilian use such as hospitals and schools until they were replaced by more recent development during the late 1960s through early 1980s when northside streets became lined with shopping malls complete with big box stores and highrise apartments overlooking Interstate 10

The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish explorers in 1821. The area was part of California before it became a U.S. state in 1850. The city was founded by Mormon missionaries in 1847 and named for quarry owner George Temple, who donated land to the Mormons.
