Temple City is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 73,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known permanent settler in what is now Temple City was Juan Rodriguez who arrived in 1824. A few years later, Sanchez and his brother Manuel founded the town on an parcel of land that they had purchased from the widow of Tejon Rancho Santa Anita founder José Joaquin Murrieta. John Cogan made a Donation to build the first Catholic Church in what became Temple City on April 8, 1829. In 1851, Templesville got its name when Father Edward J. Byrne donated land for a mission church and school in Templesville after his death during Mexican War service as colonel of Company G Second Regiment California Volunteers Infantry at Chapultepec Barracks near Mexico City. In response to requests by local citizens for a namesake community, Father Byrne donated additional land south of Chapultepec for a new town named after him – Temple City (after St. Peter's Basilica). Temple City is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 43,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles area and is the home of Orange County's only federal courthouse. The first settler in what would become Temple City was George Wills in 1859. A post office called "Temple City" was established in 1865, and was renamed "Orinda" in 1889 after Orinda, California. The name change probably originated with Orinda's location near the eastern edge of San Bernardino County on Route 66 and its many vineyards. In 1908, the town had a population of just over 100 residents when an electric company built a substation nearby and began to provide power to nearby businesses. By 1912, Temple City had developed into an agricultural center with several big cotton plantations being operated by local farmers as well as two small banks and two churches. In 1915-16, during World War I*, Temple City became one of several American cities that accepted food relief packages from America (the others were New York City and Chicago). The city experienced rapid growth starting around World War II until 1949 when it lost almost all its businesses to Interstate 10 construction through downtown Tempe Valley; this left only a few remaining businesses along Main Street which still serve as main thoroughfares today. During the early 1960s most Temple City residents supported the newly formed La Raza Movement led by Hector Ramos who unsuccessfully ran for mayor against incumbent John Leonard*. Ramos' membership helped spur growth back into business areas on Main Street including restaurants such as El Pollo Loco* Mexican restaurant (later closed) which opened in 1961 followed by Jiffy Lube* convenience store opened in 1963 which became one of Tempe Valley's longest-running employers.* In 1969–70 Tempe Valley voters approved Measure M spending $1 million to establish Unified School District No 2 covering both sides of town betweenTemple Avenue/University Boulevard and Genessee Drive/ Pima Road making it possible for other towns within Simi Valley Unified School Districts to join forces for educational purposes††† *. This effectively ended private school tuition rates within Simi Valley Open Schools Districts but opened up new opportunities for parents to send their children attend public schools outside of their home communities†*. However these plans never came true due mainly because money raised from property values taxes generated by open schools districts went towards general government services rather than providing financial assistance or benefits specifically geared towards students attending open schools§§ *. As mentioned earlier there have been numerous attempts over recent years by various individuals or groups interested in resurrecting unified school district no 2 activity but without success*‡‡ *.
