Temple City is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 27,782 at the 2010 census. Temple City is located on the Temescal Canyon Scenic Byway and is known for its many agricultural industries, including wine production and cattle raising. The city's name comes from the nearby Mount Shasta volcano. The first people to live in what is now Temple City were Native Americans who hunted game near present-day Mount Shasta. In 1848, businessman Benjamin Frawley developed land east of town along Shasta Boulevard and named it Temple City after his religious sect’s temple in London, England. This area would later become one of the most heavily populated areas of San Bernardino County with over 100 families living there by 1870. In 1875, Leland Stanford bought some of Frawley's land and built a large flour mill on the site that still stands today as the largest flour mill in California. In 1886, Stanford donated land to build a college which would become University of Southern California (USC). The city was incorporated as a village on December 6th 1902 by Mayor Waddell Smith with 7 residents; however this incarnation lasted only until 1904 due to an error in their election results that saw Mr. Waddell Smith elected mayor despite being less popular than other candidates A new Village Charter was ratified by voters on February 5th 1905 with 11 residents voting; this charter established government under a Mayor-Council system with two seats per ward City services were provided through three Public Works Committees: Streets and Sewers; Parks Department; Housing Bureau The first post office opened in Temple City on October 9th 1907 In 1912 work began on building Interstate 10 between Los Angeles and Pasadena On December 1st 1915 when USC moved into its new campus across Harbor Drive from downtown Temple City it became clear that space had been allocated for another community within Sanctuary Hills adjacent to USC called "New Mecca". New Mecca never came to be as development plans called for heavy traffic congestion around campus which led to its abandonment in favor of larger homes closer to freeway traffic
Dragon Gate is a chain of theme parks located in the city of Temple City, California. The amusement park opened on July 10, 1966 and was the first significant amusement park in the city. It was originally known as American Adventure Park and changed its name to Dragon Gate on October 7, 1976 after it merged with Golden World amusement park. The company went bankrupt in 1992 and closed down the park in 1994.
