The first people to live in what is now Temple City were the Shoshone and Ute who had been living there for centuries before missionaries began arriving in 1847. In 1853, Antonio Fraga founded a mission called San Francisco de la Luz on land that he had bought from the Yuman tribe. The Mission Santa Fé was dedicated on November 2, 1854 by Father José Ruiz y Montoya and named after St Francis of Assisi. In 1880s while Mormon pioneers were moving east they came across Hahamonten Creek and decided to take over some of its bottomland for farming purposes which would eventually become Temple City. They name their new town Hahamonten Village after it but soon changed it back to Temple City because they felt that it would be more likely to stay with them and not move away again if people started calling it Hahamonten Village. One of the earliest businesses in Temple City was an Italian restaurant which operated from 1886 until 1899 known as La Trattoria Italiana (the Italian Restaurant). After World War II many American servicemen returned home and founded their own businesses such as The Red Roof Inn & Suites (1946), JCPenny's (1948), Golden Corral (1950) and Target (1952). But most importantly during this time many famous Americans lived or visited here including Ronald Reagan who gave his inaugural address at US Naval Station Great Lakes (1981), movie stars like Katharine Hepburn, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., Presidents Eisenhower and Nixon as well as pioneer rockstars like Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis

Temple City is a small city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 21,948 at the 2010 census. It is the site of Temple University and many other universities. The city was named for David W. Temple, an early settler in the area who donated land to the university. The first permanent settlers in what would become Temple City were three men from Connecticut: Joshua Henshaw (1685-1753), Nicholas Hazard (1687-1766) and John Wilson (1689-1757). They arrived on July 6, 1776, during the Mexican–American War and built a cabin on what is now North First Street. On December 12 of that year they met with George Washington to offer their services as militiamen in his war against Mexico. They also erected a white flag over their cabin which they called "the bird's nest." After five days of debate, the group voted to name their new town "Temple City" after David W. Temple who had given them permission to build there on his property east of Santa Ana Creek Road and north of Present Day San Bernardino Boulevard. In 1881, Drs Julius Rosenwald and Alfred Saperstein founded Radcliffe School of Medicine at Temple University which soon became one of America's leading medical schools. In 1913, then-President Woodrow Wilson sent word via telegram from Paris that he was coming to visit America and came down with typhoid fever before leaving for America on November 5th; he was only able to make it forty-eight hours before he died at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland where he had been born more than fifty years earlier on October 30th – making him one of history’s earliest Ulysses S Grant presidential heirs apparent! His funeral took place two days later at Trinity Episcopal Church where General Electric chairman Charles Evans Hughes delivered the eulogy! After two decades as an agricultural center influenced by dairy farming and citrus production until becoming predominately urban due to apartment development beginning around World War II—which has continued through today—temple city experienced significant growth following World War II when thousands upon thousands immigrants poured into its borders seeking opportunity while also creating new jobs in manufacturing/technology within its borders including Chrysler Corporation’s huge Tinseltown plant located just northeast of downtown which employed over 1 million workers during its heyday starting 1948 up until it closed in 2006! And don't forget about all those students who never made it big but always managed to stay close by going off to colleges like Caltech or UCLA or USC etc.—or even taking positions right here at home such as working for local businesses or being policemen / firemen / teachers etc.—all doing what they love without forgetting all those memories shared backdoors with friends over beer or pizza or Chinese takeout? There are simply too many stories not enough space so let's just say that “Temple City has always been there for you”!
On December 3, 1847, the first Mormon settlement in California was established in what is now Temple City. The town was named for President Brigham Young's home town of Nauvoo, Illinois. The Mormons had been traveling through central California looking for a location to establish a new kingdom and found foothills that would provide good grazing land. The group surveyed the area and decided on Temple City as its capital. After choosing their site, they began construction of their own temple which was completed in 1853.
