The original inhabitants of what is now Temple City were Mono people. In 1851, Mormons from Illinois founded the town on land that had been donated by José Altuve de la Rábida y Pineda. The Mormon pioneers named their new town after George Washington Hill, who had played an important role in helping them find their way westward during the Mexican-American War. By 1860, there were 2,500 Mormons living in Temple City and it was considered a thriving farming community with over 20 businesses and 280 residents. However, by 1870sgrowth withinthe Mormon communityhadoutstrippedthatoftemplecityandby1880thetown numbered only 50 people. By 1890, however, temple CITY had become an important center for eastern San Bernardino County as well as all of southern Riverside County due to its commanding location atop Mount San Antonio overlooking both Irvine Ranch and Mecca Valley; it also served as a transportation hub for goods moving between these counties and downtown Los Angeles through Union Pacific Railroad tracks that crossed near present day Redlands Boulevard east of Interstate 10 (I-10). During World War II much of what is now downtown Temple City was destroyed when part of Imperial Beach was bombed on December 7th 1941 during World War II by U.S. forces as part of Operation Neptune's Spear which targeted Japanese targets in Southern California coastal areas including Dana Point Harbor and parts of Newport Beach; this bombing campaign also destroyed many homes in what are now North Park Drive (west side) and East Olive Street (east side), along with infrastructure such as bridges across major waterways including Mission Bayou north of I-10 at Wilson Way; these neighborhoods are today known collectively as Poston Heights/Belmont Shore because many post office boxes still remain from this time period inside Belmont Shore area off East Olive Street just south of Wilson Way - Hoyt Road runs concurrent to Poston Heights borders Hoyt Valley neighborhood directly east to Belmont Shore while Midway Mesa runs adjacent to Poston Heights on the western edge forming Amherst Mesa neighborhoods nearby north parallel to I-10 just south of Belmont Shore boundary between Midway Mesa/Hoyt Valley Neighborhoods adjacent east & southeast corner bounded by I-5 then US 101 freeway

The population of Temple City was 7,838 at the 2010 census. The first Latter Day Saint church planted in San Bernardino County was organized on October 15, 1847, under the leadership of Orson Pratt. On February 26, 1848, Brigham Young delivered his famous sermon "A Sermon upon the Mount" within one day's travel of where present-day Temple City stands. This event helped spur LDS missionary activity throughout Southern California and into Nevada. By 1860, there were over 1,500 Latter Day Saint temples scattered throughout California. In 1867 John C. West built his largest brick family house here - now called Westlake Village - and opened it as a hotel/motel complex that served as a center for LDS missionary work and social events across Southern California until World War II when it became an Air Force Base housing numerous USAF facilities including Mission Training Center (MTC) Novena Valley AFB which offers AAF fly-ins to nearby Edwards AFB each year during Christmas season; later renamed El Toro AFB home to North American Aerospace Defense Command’s Vandenberg AFB; and Palmdale AFB home to Headquarters United States Air Forces Europe (USAFE). In 1951 USAAFE moved its mission training from MTC Novena Valley AFB (now Edwards AFB) to RAF Hardwick near Maidstone England where it remains to this day one of USAFE’s primary training areas for fighter pilots today
