The community was first established in 1875 as a station on the Southern Pacific Railroad and it became an incorporated city in 1907. The name "Tehachapi" comes from two Spanish words: "tejo" meaning "a place where fruit trees are grown" and "chapi" meaning "a man". In 1902, Tehachapi College was founded there by Dr. John Wesley Powell as one of three colleges serving east-central Kern County. In 1951, it merged with nearby Monterey Peninsula University to form Monterey Peninsula University–Tehachapi (MPUT). On February 1, 1957, all schools within MPUT were combined into one university system under the name Monterey Peninsula University–Tehachapi System (MPUTS). On September 15 of that year, MPUTS merged with Chico State University to become Chico State University–Monterey Bay Campus (CSU-MBAC).
