Tehachapi, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,998 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the banks of the Tehachapi River and has a ZIP code of 92336. The name "Tehachapi" is derived from Mission San Gabriel Rey de los Reyes (1829), which served as the easternmost mission in Alta California. In 1864, General merchandise store owner John C. Frémont founded what became known as Frémont's Last Great Journey—a journey from Sacramento to Tehachapi that followed the old trail overland from Southern California to Northern Mexico City through Sonora and Chihuahua before crossing into Texas and reaching Santa Fe. The town grew around this event; by 1870 it had a post office, store, millinery shop and schoolhouse. By 1880 it had also erected a wharf on the river for landing goods brought downriver by wagon trains bound for Stockton and other ports on the coast. In 1907, when Don Felix Rodriguez bought large tracts of land north of town along both sides of the river for farming purposes he named his new community after José Antonio Nunez y Costilla one of his generals during Mexican independence fighting against Spanish rule in North America. Tehachapi was officially established on December 2nd 1907 by order of then-Governor Hiram Johnson with 30 residents under leadership of Judge Hodge Sibley who served as first constable and later mayor (1908-10). At its peak population in 1910 there were 350 people living in 23 rented homes spread over 3 blocks west of Main Street with an additional 36 people living in 17 houses belonging to Mr. & Mrs Dixon east side streets southwest of Main between First Avenue & Seventh Street After World War I there was much growth due to irrigation projects led by various agricultural interests such as George Pfeiffer Sons Farms (1917-1920), Irrigation District No 7 (1920-25), United States Army Corpsof Engineers (1926-30) which built 8 miles long wheelbarrow water pipelines carrying shallower water upriver past present day Goffs Field Factory State Historic Park to Folsom Lake where diversion dams created Lake Yuma began supplying drinking water for Los Angeles while exports continued at Folsom Lake resulting in much development including recreational fishing opportunities now managed by state Fish & Game Department since 1959 at present location just east off US 101 near eastern edge Of town next To seagull airport

Tehachapi, California (formerly Tejon and then San Bernardino) is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 71,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Tehachapi was George Coyote in 1836. The town was platted in 1881 by brothers John Gillett and James Irvine. The name "Tehachapi" was derived from the Chumash word techo meaning "to start out". In 1886, two years after incorporation as a city, the post office changed its name to Tejon because of an erroneous belief that it had been named for Tecumseh, leader of the Shawnee people. The largest Anglo settlement in San Bernardino County began with French Canadian immigrants coming to work on irrigation projects near Redlands between 1868 and 1870: François Leduc and his family were among them. Wagonloads of refugees followed later that year duringurlive fighting between Mexico and Native Americans known as the February Cattle Raids; many settlers lost their homes and livestock in this violence. One result of this bloodshed was increased immigration to Southern California by Northern Europeans interested in finding new land to farm where profits could be made from goods exported back home. In 1876–77 a large team of men led by José Joaquin Mora founded Ramon Rancho Santiago de la Salle east of present day Tejon on what is now US Route 66 just north of Arroyo Grande Dam No 7A (now called I-10). This endeavor marked an important turning point for both Mora's cattle drive operations westward into today's Kern County and for La Salle County as a whole – it also provided employment for many local residents who had never before seen ranching activity up close or at any level! Today there are several small moratoria still confines within heathlong ranches operated by descendants or related families today while larger ranches have sold off portions over time…. Ramos died shortly afterwards after becoming ill while driving south across country on his route…In 1880 Ramon donated all remaining interest along current SR 6 east to Don Fernando Menchaca which became known as Menchaca Villa al Rancho Rinconada once donated land reached its destination(Don Fernando Menchaca Park currently occupies most acreage donation including much previously private property)." But even though Ramon may have laid down some groundwork for what eventually became Tejon – he did not actually call it that until 1886 when both cities were incorporated – most locals still referring to their hometown simply as "Tehon" or "Tecomah." Eventually, however, due to confusion over jurisdictional issues surrounding other nearby towns such as Lancaster (then El Sobrante) following efforts by West Side businessmen Tom Dooley and Ernest Hemingway respectively to unseat then mayor Manuel Nieto - all three cities amalgamated under one banner effective January 1 1921 – becoming one municipality with its own government which continued until 1984 when it again split apart due à various municipal financial struggles leading ultimately to annexation back into Tehon City proper by successive administrations culminating with Measure M taking effect November 3rd 2002 giving the entirety back under one roof making it once again effectively just one city subject only unto itself….. It wasn't until 1986 when both cities were incorporated that most locals began referring to their hometown simply as "Tehon" or "Tecomah."
