Mining operations continued until 1909 when production dwindled due to changes in technology and competition from other mines across America. Today, a small community exists outside of Empire existing primarily off-road trucking routes Pioneer Highway and Rifle Road

A large number of its homes are used for agricultural purposes such as raising chickens or pigs. There is also a small hospital serving this community which opened in 1978.

In 1862, a group of Mormon pioneers arrived in Tehachapi from Pleasanton on the north side of San Joaquin Valley. They founded Fremont City on the east bank of Big Creek just south of present-day Los Angeles. The Mormons were forced to leave during the Civil War but continued to live inTehachapi until they left for Utah in 1868. In 1865, a railroad was constructed throughTehachapi and it became an important transportation hub for farmers and traders coming into Southern California. The town prospered and by 1876 it had a population over 10,000 people who lived in permanent buildings or on small farms around Post Office Square which still stands today as one of downtowns most popular attractions. roar
