Tehachapi is known for its red wine production and white wine production. The first Europeans to visit Tehachapi were the Spanish in 1821 when they camped near the riverbank on their way down from Monterey Bay. A year later, Captain Fortunato Carrillo of the brig "Hidalgo" explored and surveyed what is now Kern County as far north as Bakersfield; he named it after his military commander, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna y Costilla. In 1827, José Maria Lando founded a mission on Rancho Santiago del Angel in present-day Tehachapi and served until his death in 1839. Mexican missionary Juan Crespí visited Tehachapi in 1846 and published an account of his journey there titled "A traversing of parts of Southern California." In 1850s two brothers – James Irvine and John Irvine – started to grow grapes on some 20 acres (8 ha) they leased from Manuel Nieto at Chahuita Creek Vineyards northeast of town along Highway 395. TheIrvines produced Mission Pale Ale (now Yuengling), Blanco Ale (now White Claw), Kolsch light lager (Kellogg Brewery), Porter Stout (Oskar Blues Brewery), Texas Ale (now Lone Star Brewing Company), Temescal pale ale/stout hybrid beer and Weyerbacher Hefeweizen beer during that time period. In 1951 their brother Donnie founded Donnie's Vineyard & Winery adjacent to their family home with help from Loren Byrne who had been working at Donnie's father's winery since 1933. From then until 1989 both Donnie's Vineyards & Winery & Donnie Family Estates were owned by businessman Jack Doyle while Jack's wife Rita ran the business side until her death in 2006 which left Jack Doyle sole owner of both businesses including vineyards plus estate wines which are now available only through direct order or purchase fromJackDoyleWinery.. In recent years Estate wines have also moved into new bottling plants with new packaging designed to promote tourism around town specifically around Historic Railroad Depot buildings...
