Tehachapi, California is a small community located in Kern County, California. The population of the community was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The name "tehachapi" is derived from the Spanish word "tecatecchi" meaning "to trade." The first permanent settler in Tehachapi was George Hargrave who arrived on September 10, 1859. Hargrave and his wife Mary set up a store in a cabin on the east side of town. Hargrave became involved with local politics and served as mayor from 1861 to 1865. He also founded the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Tehachapi and donated land for its construction. In 1872, John Wesley Powell traveled through Kern County and when he reached Tehachapi he noted that it looked like an Indian village with huts scattered around a open area where they were trading goods with Indians. One day after his visit, George Hargrave came into town to see what Powell had found and met him there. Afterward, George started trading goods back and forth between San Francisco and Los Angeles until his death in 1899 at the age of 86 years old. During World War II, many Japanese Americans living in Southern California were interned at various sites across Kern County including Atchison Barracks (now Chabot Dam), Yuma Proving Ground, Topaz Mine (now known as White Sands Missile Range) and others during 1942-1945 under Operation ALIEN JAPANESE EXPLOSION or JAPANESE BOMBINGS IN CALIFORNIA which was code named "MAGNUM." Some of these individuals are buried at East Cemetery near downtown Tehachapi.

Today, Tehachapi is a cultural and commercial center with a population ofabout 30,000 residents. The history of Tehachapi goes back to 1869 when James H. Tehachapi founded the small town of Tehonchapi Creek on land he had acquired from Mexican traders at the height of the gold rush. The town quickly became an agricultural center due to its location at one of the most important crossroads in California for transcontinental mail routes between Sacramento and Las Vegas. In addition, it served as a transportation hub for settlers moving westward during the early 19th century. During World War II, parts of Tehonchapi Creek were used as bombing targets by American forces duringOperation Overlord; however, no damage was done to either property or people within tehomchapi creek itself. In 1951, portions ofTehonchapi Creek were included within East Bay Municipal Utility District #2 when that district was formed from smaller municipal units surrounding San Francisco Bay Area cities such as Oakland and Berkeley. A major development occurred in 1969 when Interstate 5 was constructed through central California bypassingTeHonchapa City limits; this led to significant growth for the city across various sectors including retail commerce, education, government services and housing developments.. Today's economy is based largely on professional services such as law enforcement and health care; however there are also many heavy industry enterprises located within close proximity to downtown or other business districts including Mesquite Valley Airport which serves as both local and international airport serving eastern San Bernardino County
Tehachapi, California was founded in 1847 by Captain George Brougham. The town became a part of the United States in 1850 and was made the seat of Mono County. In 1862, it was renamed Chino and then Tehachapi. It was platted in 1873 and named after Tehachapi Pass, an important route for wagon trains travelling between Sacramento and Mexicali.
