Tehachapi, California is a small town located in Inyo County, California. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Tehachapi Mountains and has a warm climate that sees highs in 100 degrees Fahrenheit during summer months and lows of 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) during winter months. Its name means " place of the white-tailed deer." The community began as cattle ranching country in the 1880s. A post office was established at Tehachapi in 1889, and by 1895 it had become an incorporated town with a population of about 300 people. By 1907 Tehachapi had grown to 1,500 residents, and there were also a few businesses including two banks and five grocery stores. In 1930s oil production started coming to Tehachapi from Kern County; over time it became one of the most important oil towns in southern California because of its location at the junction of three major pipelines supplying oil products to various parts of Southern California. During World War II many local businesses helped contribute materially to war effort; such as JB Hunt Clothing Store which furnished military uniforms for troops stationed in nearby Indio and northern Bakersfield counties. The name for the county seat, Lathrop, came about because the first post office in the area was established there. In 1910, a new courthouse and jail were built in town and named after Judge Benjamin Fenton of Los Angeles County. In 1916, a school district was formed within the county and the name changed to Tehachapi School District No. 2. That same year saw the opening of what is now Riverside High School on Spring Canyon Rd., east of town (now known as West Valley High School). The first high school in this area was opened at Alpine Meadows near present-day Cathedral City on September 15th, 1927. Today’s high school system has more than 26 schools throughout Kern and Tehachapi Counties including eight located in Lathrop!
