This dam was eventually completed and it became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Tehachapi thanks to its views over downtown Los Angeles! Tehachapi is located in Kern County, California and was founded by the Costilla family in 1861. The Costilla Ranch stretched from the San Joaquin Valley to the Tehachapi Mountains. In 1881, it passed through marriage to Humboldt County’s Anna Maria Sutter and became part of that county. When Humboldt died in 1892, his widow sold the ranch to James Wickersham, who renamed it Tehachapi Ranch. Wickersham also developed a cattle ranch at nearby Needles and built a small town there on top of his property in 1913. In 1932, Wickersham sold his land to the United States government for use as part of the Tehachapi Indian Reservation. The reservation ran from north of Needles all the way down to Muir Woods National Monument and included parts of present-day Kern County as well as portions of northeastern Los Angeles County and eastern Riverside County. It was one of four reservations created during World War II as part of Johnson’s New Deal program aimed at bringing about racial equality within American society. The reservation had a population of about 5,000 people when it was closed in 1978 by then-President Jimmy Carter because he believed that Indians were not contributing enough money to federal coffers. Today, only a few hundred people live on the reservation proper while most residents are scattered across various surrounding communities including Needles and Chatsworth; however, some 700 or so tribal members still reside on various business sites near Chatsworth off U.S.-Mexico borderlands east of Interstate 10
Tehachapi, California was founded in 1849 as the first town in what is now Kern County. The post office in Tehachapi was established in 1850. In 1876, Tehachapi became an incorporated city and the first white woman to serve on the Kern County Board of Supervisors.
