Tehachapi is a small town in Kern County, California, located in the eastern Mojave Desert. The population was 2,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino−Riverside−Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Tehachapi" means "place where there are cotton plants." In 1853, prospectors discovered gold in Tehachapi Valley and began to develop the area as a mining district. By 1865, over 1 million dollars had been taken from the mines and telegraph operations were established between Tehachapi and other parts of southern California. In 1867, Genoa Oil Company established an oil refinery here which became one of the largest in America. The townspeople built a school and post office in 1868; on July 29 of that year they organized themselves into a community with their own government under the leadership of Mayor Wm Fenton. The townsite was named for Captain John Sutter who had explored portions of Nevada during his surveys for Seneca White Corporation in 1863-64. Captain Sutter's party made camp near present day Tehachapi on May 8, 1864 while journeying from Yuma to visit mineral claims he had found north of Carson City. On September 15th Captains JB Haggerty (of American Fur Company) and John Woolridge (of United States Army) joined forces with Captains George Atherton (of New Mexico Territory) and Chauncey Browne (of California Volunteers), all members of General Custer's Seventh Cavalry Regiment escort wagon train traveling through Bakersfield on its way to Sacramento following Ulysses S Grant'sMarch 20 speech on Black Hawk War strategy at Fort Bridger east of Salt Lake City Captain Haggerty & Co took possession today [July 1st] 1870 when ranchers started coming west because it was too hot to farm south side & water wasn't available up there so they built wells etc., miners started coming next door but mostly farmers until about 1880 when silver discoveries got big enough everyone moved out except some who still have land around school & post office
