The townsite was first settled by Mexicans in 1849 and named Villa Alejo de Tehachapi after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. A post office was established there in 1859, and the name changed to Tehachapi in 1870. In 1886, it became an incorporated city with a charter from the state of California. The city's downtown area has been called "the heart of Silicon Valley" because that is where many technology companies have their headquarters since they were founded there more than 50 years ago. The original mission for Tehachapi was to provide water to pioneers traveling overland through what is now Owens Valley. Today, other purposes include education and tourism as well as providing employment for locals who are located around the valley periphery or within its boundaries but do not live hereabouts. It is one of only a few places in North America where Native American peoples have had direct contact with Europeans (at least according to historical records). Spanish missionaries arrived here some time between 1769-1774 and started Christianityization efforts among these people which continued until 1821 when Mexico ceded Alta California to America on February 26, 1848 following its war with Spain over this territory’s boundary issues (see Mexican–American War). The new country included parts of modern-day Kern County including Tehachapi as well as parts of Modoc County today’s Placer County. In 1850 during Yuma Creek Massacre near present day Fillmore Avenue & University Boulevard residents gathering water for cattle killed six Indian men including several children under the guidance of Presidio Captain Manuel Garza y Costilla as part of military campaign against Apache Indians led by Colonel James Hahnenberger;[3] consequently Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico (St Francis Xavier) became known locally as “Hahnenberger Chapel” due to these events which further solidified Anglo-Mexican relations throughout muchof Californias early history; prior thereto Chihuahua Governor José Joaquín Murrieta offered free land grants totaling 1 million acres adhering towards future City Limits although no such offer ever materialized.[4][5] Eventually most all areas east & south Ofcurrent US 101 entered Mexican hands although Rancho Vivellones [6] lay undeveloped avoidng any potential conflict ensuing from land acquisition.[7][8] After years passed various schoolteachers began teaching English classes home economics skills & farming methods along sideEnglish language instruction so citizens could learn about their surroundings while living amongst them; later still weather stripping began taking place becoming increasingly common due girdling agricultural lands creating extremely rich coal seams underneath Considerable amounts ol silver ore also Occurring including Mineo [9][10], Orocodone [11], etc………………….. The site would be home to one million GM cars over four years with manufacturing jobs and other development taking place adjacent to the plant including an airport and shopping center nearby; however no deal ever came through due to opposition from local politicians as well as GM’s desire for open space within Contra Costa County which at that time included Berkeley Heights/El Sobrante/Oakland on its eastern edge
