Tehachapi, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population of Tehachapi as of the 2010 census was 914. As one of the most remote and rural communities in Kern County, it has always been known for its agricultural production. Today, Tehachapi's economy still rests on its agricultural production but also includes some light industrial and other services. The name "Tehachapi" may derive from an Paiute word meaning "place where buffalo grazed." There were two ranchers who owned land in the area that became Tehachapi: John Sutter and his brother-in-law George Hinkle. The Sutter ranch extended from modern day Ojo Pass Road east to the river below today's Airport Rd., while Hinkle's Ranch stretched from Murphy Canyon east to Bakersfield (now part of Hanford City). From 1851 until 1868 all five ranchers were partners with what is now called the Mormon Battalion under Brigham Young. In 1868 when Sutter sold his land near present day downtown Tehacapa to newly arrived Mexican immigrants, he named his new community after himself - Tehachepi. As early as 1858 there had been talk about building a railroad through this region and by 1870 some construction had already begun on the Fresno, San Joaquin and Northern Railway. The$2 million project was finally completed in 1883 by Butch Cassidy and His Sundance Cowboys along with other entrepreneurs who made up Manifest Destiny; they wanted to show America that they could provide quick access to reliable water power so their industries could grow fast! However, things didn't go quite according to plan... even though Section 8 housing was built for workers at various local mills including those belonging to Southern Pacific Railroad (SP), many of these same people ended up being displaced when automation took over during World War II! It wasn't until 1959 when TEHACHAPI'S own incorporation as a city made it possible for businesses within our walls! Tehachapi ( pronounced "teh-a-chee-ah") is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. It was founded by the Mexican Empire in 1853 as part of the Rancho Tehachapi grant. The population was 26,171 at the 2010 census. The name means "place of the tortillas" in Spanish. The first Europeans to visit Tehachapi were Juan Bautista de Anza and his party on July 29, 1769. They named it Paso y Tehachepi after their guide, José Francisco Tejeda y Ruiz, who brought them here from Mission Viejo. A post office called Tehachapi was established in 1857 and operated until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1916 the town became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and council; its current form came about when it amalgamated with other cities within San Bernardino County during 1974–1975 realignment of county government under Governor Jerry Brown's Proposition 13 program. In 1840 Mexican soldiers under Colonel Antonio López Adobe built a small fort at what is now known as Adobe Trail to keep ranch hands penned up while they raided nearby missions for supplies. The Adobe Trail community grew rapidly around this fort and soon spread into neighboring towns such as Mescalero (19th century) and Redlands (20th century). On October 25, 1853, General Mariano Arámendi granted Rancho Tejon i la Hacienda del Presidio to Fray Angelico Chavez for $5 per acre ($). Chavez sold additional parcels including much of present day downtown Tehachapi to various individuals and businesses over the next few years for approximately $80 peracre ($). In 1856 twos men from New Mexico by the name of Gillespie arrived at Chihuahua River Colony on horseback looking for land grants west of Los Angeles Bay; one group went north along present day US Route 101 then downriver past today's Mojave Desert before arriving near what is now White Sands Boulevard;[1] another group traveled southwest along modern Interstate 10 then turned east towards Chihuahua City before reaching today's town.[2][3] Gillespie et al.'s survey showed that sections of east Riverside County were suitable for farming but no land was available farther west beyond Joshua Tree National Park so they returned home without making any further claims.[4] After their return many local residents decided to join them on their trip instead resulting in what is now known as Rancho Moreno de las Californias or simply 'the Moreno Group'. Los Coyotes may have been responsible for killing American Indian trader George Custer three days after he reached Black Rock Canyon on February 14, 1876,[5][6][7] which increased tensions between settlers and Native Americans across Southern California.[8][9][10] Los Coyotes were eventually hunted out by Ulysses S Grant's army following failed negotiations in 1880[11]. Some 400 people had gathered around Topaz Creek when word got back to Grants Little Company about Custer's death prompting Lieutenant John Drakeford commanding Post 3rd Cavalry Division 1st Infantry Regiment[12], some 20 miles southeast of where he fell,[13] to ride into townchroming paths leading down valley floor early that morning looking for anyone know anything about him or his whereabouts – he would later be buried at Glendale Cemetery .
