Tehachapi is a small, dusty town in Kern County, California, located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. The desert climate of Tehachapi allows for year-round agriculture with limited development outside of the summer months. The town's ZIP code (95032) is within the Tehachapi Unified School District and its boundaries include portions of Kern and Inyo Counties as well as parts of Southern Nevada. Hunting and fishing are two notable activities in the area which account for much of the local economy. The name "Tehachapi" means "place where people live." It is thought that this name was given to the community by Mexican traders who visited this area in 1847. At that time, there were no permanent residents in present-day Tehachapi; it had been a trading post since 1836 when Californio Manuel Nieto built a adobe courthouse here from what is now part of Union Pass National Monument. A post office called "Tecopa" was established here in 1849 but never served any real purpose because there were no trails leading into or out of Tehachapi proper. In 1856, prospector John Wesley Powell discovered gold near today's Hosmpreser Road while exploring nearby Mormon Wells; soon after, miners began arriving to find gold nuggets on nearby hillsides and creek beds. By 1860, over 100 men were mining at various locations around Tecopa; however, many more followed discoveries elsewhere in Kern County during that decade including at Fillmore Springs (1860), Buffalo Hills (1862), White Sands (1864), Anza Fields (1865), Doheny Wells (1867), Mammoth Cave Rancho Seca (1868) and Independence Mines(1870). In 1876 an act became law giving land east of Sierra Nevada Mountains to be included within Carson City district under consideration for inclusion within Los Angeles county; however, due to opposition from certain business interests within Los Angeles County led by Senator George Hearst (& his brother William Randolph Hearst Jr.), annexation failed despite public opinion being overwhelmingly against it. This decision effectively ended mining operations around Tecopa Valley although some continued intermittently until about 1910 when underground workings resumed due to better transportation infrastructure developments adjacent to today's Hosmpreser Road mine complex northwest of town center.mining declined gradually thereafter until World War II when vast amountsof silver were mined here following discovery along Interstate 10 just northeast of town center across from old US Army POW/MIL depot known as Fort Bliss; troops stationed thereilled numerous Japanese soldiers during World War II Of note also are ranchers Frank Chaney & Don Houlihan who operated one significant roundup operation on horseback between 1951-1958 & Edward Mims who ran one such roundup operation between 1959-1964 - both men later became major figures in CDFW wildlife management
