The first gunslingers in Tehachapi were Rancho Tehachapi pioneers Manuel Martinez and his brother, Francisco. They started shooting shotguns in 1887. From there they developed into handguns. On December 16, 1907, George W. Winchester opened the first gun shop in Tehachapi; it was called the Winchester Arms Company. Manuel Martinez and his brother continued to operate their business until 1951 when it was taken over by Cabelas Incorporated
Tehachapi is a small town located in Kern County, California, in the central area of the state. The population was 6,726 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The name "Tehachapi" means "the place where cattle are driven." The first post office opened in 1887 and remained open until 1959. Tehachapi's economy is mainly agricultural with a small manufacturing sector. The community was originally settled by Chumash Native Americans who were displaced during the Mexican-American War. They built lodges near present-day Tehachapi Creek to resist Paiute attackers and their allies United States forces led by General Edmund Teller attacked Chumash villages on November 10, 1847. A fortification called Topaz Hill was built to defend against future attacks and it remains standing today as a museum about Chumash history and culture. In 1861, Rancho Rincon de las Animas Mexican Land grant was sold to John Cranch for $5,000 (). At its peak in 1840, Rancho Rincon had over sixty thousand acres () including what is now Tehachapi County. In 1875 John Sutter purchased much of this land from Cranch and founded Sutterville which later became Sacramento City (). By 1886 there were eleven San Joaquin Valley towns (Atascadero, Benicia, Buena Park/Cypress Hills/Pleasanton Junction), thirteen ranches (), ninety plantations (), three hundred wives (), one thousand children (), four hundred workers (), twenty miles (32 km) of track from Los Angeles () mainline bus line(), two water towers (), sixteen electricity poles () and six telephone lines (). In 1886 an act passed by Congress designated Kern County as part of newly organized California(). On February 14th following passage of that act by Senator Hiram Johnson the telegraph line between Los Angeles andSacramento went online (). That same year ranchers began leasing public land east of Winton Road for grazing purposes (). In 1908 they leased an additional 222 acres adjacent to Rincon de las Animas Preserve (); this parcel would become known as Big Dry Lake . The last ranching operation occurred in 1962 when Corrales National Monument was established within it .

In 1853, gold was discovered at nearby Sutter's Mill, so many people moved to central valley to prospect for gold that tehachapi became known as Gold country. In 1862, an army of 9 Mexican soldiers led by General Kearny invaded and burned down the Pomo village at Teahachiipi Creek. The Paiute people then started living here permanently and began developing this area into a farming community. Farming became the dominant form of subsistence agriculture here until World War II when industry took over and tehachapi lost its agricultural importance. Today tehachapi retains some aspects of its traditional culture such as potlatches, pueblo dances and reverends leading services in small churches on Saturday mornings
Tehachapi, California was first settled by the Tongva people in 1849. The town was founded on the east side of Tehachapi Creek and named for a nearby hill, Tehachapi Peak. It was built on land that had been granted to the Tongva by Mexican officials in 1834. In 1862, there were only 7 residents in Tehachapi; it grew rapidly due to irrigation projects and agricultural production. The town became an important transportation hub with connections to the rest of southern California. An important mineral discovery was made in 1914 when oilwas found at the bottom of Tehachapi Canyon. After World War II, many businesses relocated to Los Angeles because of high labor costs in Santa Clara County.
