Tehachapi, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,834 at the 2010 census. The name means "place of trees" in the Miwok language. The first Americans to visit Tehachapi were missionaries from San Francisco on December 10, 1859. Father Isidore geared his mission to convert the natives and built a small chapel there in 1860. A post office called Tehachapi was established in 1863 and remained in operation until 1912. In 1876, Gold Rush miners discovered precious metals near Tehachapi Creek and began vying for control of the area. Rancho Los Algodones was granted to Jameson Daly and fellow miner Pahrump Jack Hills in 1877 as part of their claim along with other tracts of land that later became Kern County. In 1880, John Sutter arrived at Yerba Buena Cove with Jedediah Smith and founded Mission San José de la Luz on November 17th - one of Yosemite National Park's earliest settlements. On December 12th1889 Emigrant Station #5 was established by George Fenton south of present day City limits; it would serve as the starting point for many stagecoaches running through Kern County during this period including those traveling down Tehachapi Creek to meet up with American gold rushes happening east of Sacramento creating what is now known as "the trail of Tears". In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt visited Tehachapi for an inspection tour associated with his so-called New Frontier program which aimed to promote economic growth throughout California by encouraging natural resource exploration and development statewide. During his visit he made several speeches about Manifest Destiny and America's role within Asia while also toured various mines around the state including Gold Hill & Tuolumne River Mines near El Sobrante (now part of Modesto), Placerita Mine north of Stockton, Cimarron mine west Fresno (now Visalia), North Coast Rancheros near Barstow (now Redding) among others An event worth noting occurred during Roosevelt's visit when he met Chief David Burnett who had been driving cattle fromwinters past Hanford Dam back into ranching hands after providing water power for irrigation

Tehachapi, California is located in the southern end of San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County. The area now comprising Tehachapi and portions of Baldwin and La Puente Counties was part of Rancho Santa Anita, given to Manuel Nieto by Governor Pío Pico on July 4, 1876. The land was also acquired by John C. Fremont in 1878 from Reyes Aguilar. After Mexican nationals were expelled from the valley during the 1880s, settlers began arriving in large numbers. By 1905, there were over 10,000 people living in Tehachapi County. The first European sighting of what would become Tehachapi is thought to be a Native American headwaters village dating back to 1170 A.D., when Mission San Gabriel Xavier Parish Indian Agent Don Manuel Nieto sighted horses and camels grazing at what is now known as Coyote Wells Creek near present-day Tehachapi Pass (on State Route 76). In 1876 Lieutenant Colonel James Hutton discovered an abandoned rancho at mile marker 6 on Spanish Fork Road just east of present day town of Baldwin (now part of La Puente), which he named Rancho Santa Anita because it contained a springs called holy water that had been brought over from Mission Santa Catalina de Toluca by missionship El Escorial on October 16, 1771. After two years of exploration under Captain Augustus Fenton aboard HMS Beagle, General José Antonio Mendez declared war against Mexico on November 28th 1877 and proceeded with his army down the Ventura River into Sonoma County until they reached Monterey Bay where they departed on December 15th for San Francisco. On January 8th 1888 Juan Bautista Alvarado granted ranchoSantaAnita Mexican Land Grant #726 verifying that Nieto's claim had been validated by Commodore George Dewey as early as February 1st 1886 when he issued proclamation 9A/8 North vesting all such grants including titles to armas y caballerias en el rio Negro y la playa de los Padres Cosme y Francisco who señalaban las valles del Rinconcito & Cananegra con respecta al corral de la Majorca’...thus making the entire valley vested with Mexican title including this region southward to Coyote Wells Creek where Don Manuel Nieto had seen the herds some time earlier... In 1907 ranchers started developing irrigated citrus orchards within miles of town while other farmers developed corn and beans crops around nearby community centers like Baldwin High School which opened its doors in 1912; then came shopping malls developments throughout town starting with One Stop Shopping Center built west of town off I-5 in 1959; followed later by Southtown Plaza built east side off I-5 between downtown Tehachapi and Palmdale subdivisions; finally Interstate 5 exits feeding directly into today's city Limits
