The town was founded by Francisco Tejeda in 1846 as a rancho (farmstead). He named it after his birthplace, Tehuacán, Mexico. The first store in town opened in 1851. On May 8th of that year local resident Dale Larkin set off fireworks from his house into the night near the Community Center to commemorate what would have been his 50th birthday (Larkin died soon afterwards from another illness). On October 12th of that year firefighters were called to a building which was on fire when they arrived; upon inspection they found out that it was only some fireworks left over from Larkin's party two weeks earlier!
