It lies east of Bakersfield and west of Mojave on the plateau between the San Joaquin Valley to the north and Owens Valley to the south. It began as a small ranching community in 1859, when John C. Frémont discovered gold near Tehachapi Pass. A post office was established in 1861 and by 1865 there were over 100 residents. The town's heyday came during World War II when it became a major military airbase for the USAAF and Navy. In 1949 Tehachapi became an incorporated town under State law; its first mayor was Wanda Kappelhoff (1949-1975). Tehachapi's economy has diversified over time with agriculture being its most common source of revenue until recently; however, recent growth has been driven by heavy industry including two oil refineries and many other businesses such as health care facilities and schools. Today, crime rates remain high but are slowly declining due to new police officers being hired each year. The name "Tehachapi" is thought to be derived from Hahkapai or Malibu Creek which runs through the community; according to one storyteller it means "water that does not flow away." One story tells of General Antonio López de Santa Anna whocamped near what is now Tehachapi in 1847 while he was trying to move his army downriver from Sacramento so he could cross into Mexico: upon hearing about this event another scout named José Vallejo found out where General Santa Anna had stopped and raided some huts where people were cooking food – thus giving rise to the name “Los Angeles” because all of these buildings still stand today (although they have been used for various purposes since then). In 1868 prospectors discovered more gold nearby at Carlsbad Caverns so settlers began moving back into Tehachapi Canyon in search of new ground for agriculture rather than leave their homes behind (the original townsite was located just outside present day Carlsbad). By 1898 there were 400 people living in Tehachapa Canyon combined with two trading posts operated by Native Americans: Pueblo de los Amigos on 17 October 1898 and Rancho Los Alamos on 9 November 1898 both located about three miles northeast of present day downtown Tehachaipi circa 2 miles wide bordered by mountains on three sides including Mission San Gabriel Arcángel on one side watched over by Mount Shasta Andres Romero Peak looking like an iceberg from above (). This area also served as an important staging area during campaigns against Mexican forces operating along this portion of the border such as those fought at Yuma Proving Ground during various episodes known collectively as The Battle Of Buttes National Monument (). In 1902 James Irvine developed land southeast of downtown which would become Irvine Ranch later that year becoming one of largest agricultural operations in Northern California (). After years spent searching for a better location for his ranch following floods that destroyed much acreage within his boundaries(due largely to faulty mapping), finally he selected what is now downtown Tehraupi after purchasing part interest from George Hearst () on 15 August 1908 . From 1908 until 1959 El Dorado Hills also made up part of downtown but officially left when Sherman Oaks merged into city limits
