Tehachapi, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Kern River and its namesake creek. The area now known as Tehachapi was first inhabited by the Ohlone Indians. Spanish traders and Missionaries arrived in 1821 and established missions here including San Gabriel Mission and Coyote Wells Mission. Rancho Las Tiendas was granted to Adolphus Daly in 1847, making it one of the largest ranchos in California. In 1859, John Sutter discovered gold near Tehachapi Creek and founded Sutter's Gold Rush Inn which became a popular tourist attraction today. In 1863, John Atherton organized the Kern County Agricultural Society which developed land north of Tehachapi for farming purposes including what is now downtown Tehachapi. The first post office opened in 1865 named after George Washington Carver who had donated land for the purpose along with $5 000 towards building a schoolhouse and other expenses. The present day courthouse was built around this time also. The railroad reached Tehachapi by way of Bakersfield in 1886 which led to an increase in development around town due to increased traffic heading into Bakersfield or coming out of it such as Interstate 5 on nearby I-5 Freeway south of town (now Ute Pass). By 1914 there were over 100 businesses operating withinTehachapi limits with a population of 3,000 people; all but two having been moved from their original locations since then due to changing transportation conditions or annexation by neighboring communities (Los Angeles County included). Saddleback Hills Road originally paralleled Nevada Avenue just east of town center while old Hwy 99 parallelized Nevada Ave/Saddleback Rd until 1922 when they both crossed over into Kern County concurrent with US 95 just outside town walls; remaining status quo until 1988 when Ute Pass Bridge opened connecting I-5 freeway directly to county seatBakersfield without going through either city Limits - bringing much needed tourism dollars back into city limits during that timeframe! A new hospital complex called Sturgis Medical Center LLC was completed adjacent to University Hospital southeast portion of town bounds KBH Architects Incorporated began design work on what would become homebuilt community called "Sturgis" consisting primarily of single family dwellings styled after horse barns utilizing natural gas heating/cooling systems unique among builder type structures at that time many years later still being replicated throughout entire Western USA! Accordingly plans were made for a large shopping center anchored by Sears Corporation open late afternoon hrs & remain open 24/7 thruout entire holiday season becoming one significant economic engine driving retail activity adjacent only SB State Fairgrounds across busy I-15 corridor nearest city limits

The first Breech Loading Guns appeared in 1857, making them decades older than muzzleloading pistols!

The town was named after Captain John C. Tejon, who died in a ranch fight in 1878. In 1896, Arapaho Indians killed three white men near Tehachapi while hunting deer. This event led to a race war between the Indian tribe and settlers which lasted for several years.
