Tehachapi, California is a small town in Kern County, California. It is located about an hour south of Los Angeles and less than an hour east of San Bernardino. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. The townsite of Tehachapi was first settled by Mexicans in 1847 and later Purchased by the United States in 1853 as part of Rancho Tehachapi Mexican Land Grant #5. On July 14, 1880, it became a city with a population of 2,500 people when it was annexed by Los Angeles. The name "Tehachapi" comes from the Nahuatl word "tzahcapi", meaning place where there are cottonwood trees. According to oral history, cattle were brought into Tehachapi by pioneers during the early days of American settlement in Kern County. A grazer named John Copley set up his ranch on what is now Main Street in 1848 and began raising cattle for sale in nearby downtown Lodi. By 1850, he had built a large home on what is now North Main Street that served as his headquarters for many years until it burned down in 1914. Developments around Main Street began to take form during this time including a bank (1851), school (1857), post office (1860), hotel (1864-1966) and several churches (1901-1902). In 1871 news spread through Lodi that gold had been discovered near Sutter’s Fort on the edge of Kern County; accordingly businesses sprang up throughout town eager to capitalize on potential discoveries at their local sites. In addition to silver mining claims off the northwest corner of Town Creek Road and Oregon School Road between 1865 and 1870, numerous other land mines were discovered along Route 66 over the next few decades but never developed because no one could afford to drill or prospect for these profitable resources . The discovery of oil well water offshore from Tehachapi led to increased traffic within town limits as people traveled out for supplies needed for drilling operations which also aroused business interests among merchants serving both sides of Interstate 5 northward from downtownLos Angeles
Tehachapi was first settled by the Ohlone people in the early 18th century. The area around Tehachapi became part of Mexican California after the Mexican-American War. In 1847, gold was discovered in nearby Mojave Desert and settlers began to arrive in what is now Tehachapi County. Mining operations began in earnest in this region, and aided by a railroad, businesses grew quickly and sections of the county were developed into large towns. Many well-known individuals from this time include George Hearst, who created the Las Vegas Strip as a result of his investments in mining companies; John D. Rockefeller, Sr.; and Theodore Roosevelt. throughout much of this period there was heavy use of slavery within California because it was an important source of revenue for both sides during the war.
