Tehachapi is a small town in the East Bay Regional Park District of San Francisco, California. It is located on the banks of the Sacramento River. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Tehachapi was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 4, 1542. He named it San Miguel de Tehuacán after his patron saint, and because there were no missions in that part of present-day California. In 1821, General Mexican War veteran Armand Pétion arrived with his army from New Mexico and named the community Paso del Norte for this spot on the riverbank. A year later he moved his headquarters to what is now downtown Tehachapi due to its strategic location as a crossing point for wagon trains supplying both sides in the war. On December 12, 1827, Mission San José de Arroyo became the first mission established in California when Father Junípero Serra founded it south of Tulare County along what is now I-680 about two miles west of today's town center. Commanded by Fray Juan Cámpora and staffed by Native Americans including Chief Justice Manuel Antonio Reyes y Vargas (a convert from Catholicism), San José soon developed into one of Californias most important religious missions – with more friars than anyone else living within its walls at any given time throughout its history A second mission was founded nearby at Mission Dolores on February 17, 1831 by Father José Gomez and soon developed into one of Californias most populous settlements with over 400 residents living inside its walls during its peak years in 1851 In 1840s an adobe wall replaced Spanish fencing around Mission San José so that Native American villagers could freely trade goods with Mexicans outside their compounds without fear of retaliation . This event also marked Rancho Santa Anita's purchase by Rancho Aguajarito landowner John Sutter who renamed it "Tehachapi" after his old home near Edinburgh , Scotland where he had been born in 1785 .....In 1861 local school Superintendent James Boggs built a new schoolhouse which served as both high school and post office until 1923 when it was replaced by a larger building which still serves as an educational facility today
Tehachapi was founded in 1871 by Jim Bridger and his wife, Eliza. The town grew rapidly following the construction of the Yuba River Railroad in 1872. In 1875, Tehachapi incorporated as a city. By 1907, the population had reached over 1,000 people. The city grew even more following the completion of California's transcontinental railroads in 1911 and 1913. In 1916, Tehachapi became one of fifty cities to be included in the State of California when it was created as a result of the 1915 statehood referendum. The city experienced significant growth during World War II with its extensive manufacturing capabilities. However, due to high housing costs and competition from other cities within California, Tehachapi declined during the postwar period. Since 1970, however, Tehachapi has seen continuing growth with an estimated 5 percent annual population increase since 2000.
