Tehachapi, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 5,848 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Tehachapi were the padre and his party from Nuño de la Vega in 1539 who named it San Miguel del Norte after their discovery of a mountain peak that bore that name in New Spain. Mission San Francisco Solano was established by Father Junipero Serra in 1821 on land granted by Mexico for secular use only; no missions were built here until 1843 when Mexican governor Manuel Micheltorena assigned two military officers, José Joaquin María Orozco and José Antonio Lara to build San Francisco Dolores mission on an elevated plain east of Tehachapi Creek. A year later Mexican president Antonio López Montoya ordered Captain Juan Bautista Moreno, commander of Rancho Santa Anita near present-day Chico, to build the mission as well as another two Missions: Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes (1825), also known asMission Concepción because founded by Conquistador Pío Pico; and Provincella de los Angeles (1828). But before Moreno could complete his construction projects he was killed by Indians at Sutter’s Mill during Gold Rush days on July 25, 1849. The buildings at Mission Dolores were completed but not dedicated until January 8, 1850 due to heavy snowmelt which delayed work crews for several weeks. The date was announced with pomp through an eighty-foot high effigy of Father Junipero Serra sculptured out of white Carrara Marble imported from Rome and placed next to the new mission building facing south on High Street in honor ofFathers José Gabriel García Márquez and Felipe Neri who had served here earlier that year as Superior Provincial and Vicar Apostolic respectively. Asa Gray became the first pastor on October 12th following installation from Godoythesierra Monastery situated about eighteen miles upriver near today’s Delorme Lake northeast of what is now Fresno. In 1861 Revd Daniel Webster arrived from Boston serving as pastor for three years before returning home due to ill health He was succeeded by Revd James Manning who resigned January 10th 1863 after serving less than one month when war with Mexico began In 1878 gold seekers discovered Copper Canyon below modern day Tehachapi Creek and soon thereafter mines opened producing Silver ore including some scattered around town today including those operated by United States Steel while more recent operations have included Consolidated Mines Inc., Imperial Metals Inc., Northern Copper Mining Co., Pacific Copper Mining Co., United Metals Corp., Amecamec Corporation since 1978 Prisoner Of War camp held between 1942-1945 teenaged Japanese Americans interned here during World War II

A year later, an American trader named George Armstrong Custer led a group of Lakota Sioux north from Bannockburn Dakota Territory through Tehachapi Pass into Kern County on their way to the Central Valley and Stockton. In 1859, prospectors found rich silver ore near the present-day town site; however, no one developed the mine until 1886 when Michael J. Moriarty discovered silver veins totaling over 20 million ounces (540 tons). In 1912, it became known as "the Silver City" because of its high concentration of silver ore. The discovery made Tehachapi an important center for mining during America's silver boom years. Today, much remains unchanged from those early days: with its narrow streets andadobe buildings dating back to the 1860s still standing even though many have been replaced by new structures developments in recent years; a well-preserved downtown core with several churches including Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church which dates back to 1892; impressive cottonwood trees lining Telegraph Avenue which was once home to numerous stores and businesses; as well as some interesting historical artifacts such as old cannons that can be seen firing off rounds from nearby hills during various events throughout history like Fourth of July parades or Cowboy & Indian Wars reenactments etc.; all these elements make up what has come to be called "the Historic District".
Tehachapi, California was founded by the Mexican government in 1836 as part of the Alta California region. The area now includes Tehachapi and Bakersfield counties in southern California. In 1838, a group of Californios led by José Joaquin Murrieta explored and claimed land east of the Kern River that would become Tehachapi County. On November 15, 1840, US President James K. Polk issued a proclamation recognizing Mexican statehood for Alta California and creating San Diego County from parts of Imperial and Kern counties.
