In 1868, the current Mission Concepción de Jesús Calvo was founded by Fray Antonio López de la Concha as part of Rancho Santa Anita del Tehachapi; it became a full-time mission in 1889 with Diego Rivera as its first pastor. In 1901, General Pershing ordered all Mexican troops out of California but they kept coming until 1906 when they were finally driven out by an American military force under General John Pershing which included many Californios who had sided with Governor Manuel Nieto against him during the insurrectionary war between Mexico and America known as the Alta California Rebellion (1846-1848). In 1918 Mayor Arthur Jaffe donated land for a new high school which opened in 1924; enrollment increased rapidly due to World War II then grew even more after Korea War because so many white Americans moved into the area during that time period to work on defense plants (the town now has over 10000 residents). The post-war growth stopped when development resumed around 1966 bringing much poverty to locals until now there is significant affordable housing development within walking distance of most residents making Tehachapi one of the most diverse communities within 125 miles of Los Angeles or Orange County. A post office called Tehachapi was established in 1875 and remained in operation until 1907. In 1915, construction began on an L-shaped community about 4 miles east of present day Springdale Boulevard. Named after Indian Chief Tecumseh's nephew John Troup, this community was designed to provide society with housing and other amenities for miners and their families as they worked the nearby hillsides for gold discoveries. When finished, it consisted of 207 duplex homes, 12 stores/cafés (including a gas station), two churches (oneMethodist and one Presbyterian), a school (built as a schoolhouse but converted into apartments), land usage buildings including a hospital and sheriff's office building, dam gates house (now used as storage) and several small businesses including an bakery & grocery store before being destroyed by fire in 1918 while still under construction
