It lies on the southern edge of Kern County and has an elevation of 4,463 feet (1,342 m). The area now known as Tehachapi was first settled by Mono people in the early 1850s. A post office named Tehachapi was established in 1856 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1876, Don Benton built a cabin on Rancho Tehachapi near present-day Cool Valley. He became one of the earliest settlers in what would become Kern County. In 1884 he donated land to establish the townsite of Tehachapi. Don Benton's son-in-law Sam Houston donated additional land to form the community today. The first school in Tehachapi opened its doors on October 25, 1886; Mrs. Lillie White taught classes from her homechooling course until 1889 when she moved into a building which still stands on Main Street across from Big Bend Elementary School (now called Morningside Middle School). After much petitioning by parents and students alike, Alpine High Schoolopened its doors for freshmen during fall term 1989 after years of construction and fundraising by local civic groups including Rotary Club 7307 and Kiwanis Club 9336! Alpine had originally been planned as part of a larger high school campus to be located adjacent to Big Bend but that plan fell through due to budgetary limitations; instead Alpine became home to both schools which remain today as separate educational institutions with strong ties to each other! Tehachapi experienced growth following World War II with the influx of servicemen and their families who brought new life into this small town renamed for General John Custer—a major event that helped define its identity over time! Many businesses were founded during these years such as Custer Hardware Company which remains operational today; all while many residents continued their farming activities or worked outside the community altogether providing essential services such as retail sales or ranch work throughout those days! In 1969 Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher made history when he traveled through Kern county visiting various communities before taking his final vote in Congress inside Assembly Hall at 10am local time–the first lawmaker ever elected completely within his Congressional district! That same year another significant event happened when First Lady Nancy Reagan visited our little town along with her husband President Ronald Reagan giving $5 million towards development projects within our community – an inaugural gift that has encouraged countless others over ensuing years! On November 5th 2008 Mayor Jerry Pedersen announced plans for a brand new shopping center designed by landscape architect Barry Hirschman which will include hundreds of jobs creating considerable economic impact!! With so much going on here “It’s not just about Tehachapa anymore” proclaimed Mayor Pedersen soon after opening remarks!!!
