Tehachapi (pronounced "the-a-chi-ah") is a small town in Fresno County, California. The population was 9,813 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Tehachapi River east of Fresno and north of Kings Valley. The name Tehachapi comes from an Indian word meaning "place where heaps of rocks are found." The first Europeans to visit this area were surveyors working for the United States government in 1846. They named the river "Tehachapi" after one of their number, Captain John C. Tejon, who had led a party overland from Sacramento to Mono Lake in 1837. In 1859, when gold was discovered at Sink Hole Creek, about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of town on Highway 99, people began arriving for mining operations and a new community sprang up around Sink Hole Creek: Tehachapi Station. By 1870 there were 5 stores and 50 miners living in Tehachapi Junction; by 1880 there were 200 settlers and 10 stores. In 1902 it had 130 residents; by 1910 it had 150 residents and 10 businesses. In 1945 local ranchers formed the Citizens' Committee to Save Our Ranching Heritage which soon became known asSave Our Ranches or SOMARH with its acronym because that's what everyone called it back then: Old Man's Ranch Historical Research Homepage). The group lobbied county supervisors to rezone land along the river for housing development so that more acres could be used for grazing rather than farming; they also worked together with other organizations such as Habitat For Humanity to build 16 homes on 27 blocks within tehachapi junction between 1951 and 1957 using funds raised by SOMARH memberships and donations from individuals across Southern California. Today tehachapi junction has a population of just under 1000 residents although many shops remain open including two banks/grocery stores/convenience centers - One anchored inside an old shoe store & another anchored outside next door to an auto garage - making it one of largest shopping areas west of LAX!
