Tehachapi, California is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is named after the Tehachapi Mountains, which are located in nearby Kern County. The town of Tehachapi was founded on December 6th, 1887 by Hiram Maxim and his wife Emma Blackwood Maxim as a ranching community for cattle ranchers operating in what is now Kern County. The townsite at present-day Tehachapi was first surveyed on November 17th of that year by W. H. Armstrong and Captain John Sutter with an intention to name it "Herschel" after their brother-in-law who had died four months earlier while exploring the area near Bakersfield. However, no one wanted to take up the offer and so the townsite remained unnamed for another year until Hiram Maxim offered to rename it if anyone else wanted to claim it. Captain John Sutter accepted and renamed it "Tehachapi" on December 6th of 1887 following his exploration of the area around Bakersfield that same year. In 1916 Tehachapi incorporated as a city under the name "Tehachapi", but later right before its incorporation changed its name back to its original form when City of Industry changed its boundaries effective January 1st, 1917 (itself part of an overall consolidation process within Kern County). On July 15th 1990 ballot Question No. 452 (issued by then-Kern County Supervisor Donny Young) repealed all previous city ordinances regarding limits on single family homes and other zoning changes which took effect upon passage of Measure F - also known as Proposition 187 - during Nevada's 1988 gubernatorial election campaign against incumbent Jerry Brown (who had become governor after Ronald Reagan became president). After Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th 1941, President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered all U.S. municipalities involved with manufacturing or supplying goods or services within 90 miles of Los Angeles to declare themselves war industries and start production accordingly (or face fines). This order led to an increase in demand for goods from Tehachapi which helped support wartime efforts such as providing food for soldiers and their families as well as producing munitions for Allied forces; some 20% of all production output came from local companies%. The population peaked at more than 1,500 residents in 1960 but gradually declined due to migration out of California into other states during times of economic recession and social upheaval caused by large-scale immigration changes during that period. At its peak, Tehachapi had about 1,700 residents. However, most communities like Chino either lost their populations or chose not to stay after experiencing negative effects from rapid growth rates without supports such as infrastructure development or job access outside of agriculture which often outsourced jobs statewide during this time period leading directly to declines in tax revenues also known as "television valley". That year, the name change to Angeles City. The city was renamed Los Angeles in 1915 after World War I veteran General George C. Marshall who had served as Governor of California during that time. On November 10, 1932, the opening day for general election voting in Los Angeles City was set for November 12 but due to an error made by then-mayor Juanita Broderick, ballots were accepted into local polling places two days early and this caused a total vote count of 283 ballots difference from what would have been expected based on normal voting procedures. This mistake ultimately led to Broderick being removed from office by voters who elected Arturo Alvarado as her replacement
