The Tehachapi Mountains were first settled by Native Americans about two thousand years ago. The area now occupied by the Tehachapi Hills was part of the greater San Gabriel Valley region for many centuries. In 1848, a group of American soldiers led by General John C. Fremont explored and surveyed the California Gold Rush region and discovered gold in 1849. The valley quickly became one of the most important regions in California, as mining operations developed there. The Tehachapi Hills were not included in this rush but became heavily populated as a result of their proximity to goldfields. As development increased, so did competition for jobs and land, which caused tension between miners and non-miners. The hills also witnessed some serious violence during this time period- one instance involving an armed fence guard who was shot and killed while trying to stop a fight among miners. In 1871, following the discovery of more significant reserves of gold near Yuba City, California, Mining District No. 1 was organized within the newly formed state of California; the districts would be divided according to production levels (wastewater treatment plants being located in east districts). By 1907, only 350 men remained working in district No. 1; however, it continued to be one of the most productive areas for goldmining in California until 1964 when it ceased production due to environmental problems with surface water runoff from nearby mines . By 1928 there were only 10 men still working in district 1; however its productivity had increased significantly since 1927 thanks to better mine drainage plans implemented by Mines Department engineers . From 1928 on until 1958 all district 1 workings stopped because extreme climate conditions made extracting ore difficult even at low grades These same conditions have been reported recently again causing declines in silver production from old workings although no reports have yet surfaced indicating that these problems will continue
